Carly Fields digs deep to finish Comrades

Despite the challenges along the way, radio and TV personality Carly Fields completed her sixth Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 9 June.

The Algoa FM presenter – also known as a former YoTV child star – shared the news of her gruelling experience in a social media post.

Carly was one of nearly 24,000 runners who participated in the 85.91km uphill run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

In an Instagram post, Carly Fields reflected on her performance in the 97th edition Comrades Marathon.

The 42-year-old posted: “Comrades 2024… What a day it was! One of the toughest things I’ve ever had to get through, emotionally.

The bubbly blonde revealed that she had started to experience doubts that she would finish the race.

She continued: “ Around 30kms in, it hit hard… Self-doubt, panic attack, and tears… But I overcame it all with the help of my little army believing in me! (You know who you are, and I cannot thank you enough!)

She added: “Number 6 in the bag, 3 ‘downs’ and now 3 ‘Ups’! Now to celebrate and start wrapping my head around lucky number 7! Hee hee, yes, I’m not just Comrades Carly, I’m Crazy Carly too!”.

In a chat with the Breakfast Show last Friday, Carly claimed she was not putting pressure on herself to achieve a time record.

“Now, it’s about collecting all the medals. I want to get my green number (awarded to runners who achieve special milestones) for finishing ten marathons.”

Last year, Carly competed in the Comrades Marathon with an injured knee “and an hour to spare.”

She added of her determination to complete the gruelling race: “Undertrained, injured knee but will fight every step of the way to earn that precious little medal.”

The mom of two teenage daughters has been a household name since her stint on YoTV, which first aired in 1996. Since then, she’s dabbled in podcasting and voice-over work. In 2023, she joined Algoa FM, where she presents a show on Friday and Saturday evenings.

HOW MANY COMPLETED THE RACE?

According to the Comrades Marathon, 14 258 men and 3 373 women completed the race within the 12-hour cut-off.

Piet Wiersma of the Netherlands won the race, while South African Dan Moselakwe and Ethiopian Degefa Lafebo took second and third spots, respectively.

SA’s Gerda Steyn was the first woman to cross the finish line, winning her third consecutive title.
