Where is DA’s Tony Leon now? [photos]

For almost a decade, Tony Leon led the opposition political party, the Democratic Alliance, or DA. Recently, the party veteran was called in, alongside his successor Helen Zille, to negotiate coalition talks with the ANC.

Following his retirement from politics in 2007, what has he been up to since?

TONY LEON LEADS DA COALITION NEGOTIATIONS

Last week, Tony Leon was amongst the top brass of DA members who were called in to negotiate a coalition agreement with the ANC following last month’s general elections.

However, the ANC, through President Cyril Ramaphosa, has since a government of national unity (NGU)

This means that the government has invited a coalition of multiple parties working together to form a new cabinet and government in place of a coalition of two parties with majority votes.

The first parliamentary sitting will take place on Friday, 14 June, in Cape Town.

LIFE AFTER POLITICS

Before helming the DA from 1999 to 2007, Tony Leon led the Democratic Party from the inception of democracy in 1994.

Tony is a qualified lawyer with an LLB degree from the University of Witwatersrand. His father, Ramon Leon, was a High Court judge.

Since leaving politics, Tony has undertaken various fellowships at the Cato Institute Center for Liberty and Global Prosperity in Washington, Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study.

He has also authored several books of his views on politics and current affairs, as well as his biography On The Contrary. He has also been a columnist for several media houses like Business Day and the Sunday Times.

Tony Leon was also appointed as SA’s Ambassador to Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay from 2009 to 2012.

In 2013, Tony founded the PR film Resolve Communications, which deals with strategic communications, crisis management, and lobbying. He also founded the advisory firm K2 Business Intelligence.

WIFE AND KIDS

In 2000, Tony Leon married his Israeli wife  Michal Even-Zahav in a Jewish marriage ceremony at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town.

Tony is a stepdad to Michal’s two children and is also a grandfather.
