Eddie Howe Dedicates Carabao Cup Victory to Late Mother with Emotion, as Newcastle’s Dan Burn Sings ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’

NEWCASTLE has ended their 70-year quest for a significant domestic trophy, and star Dan Burn expressed: Don’t wake me from this dream.

The Geordie cemented his legacy in Toon Army history with a powerful header that opened the scoring at Wembley, guiding them to triumph in the Carabao Cup.

Adding to the jubilation, Burn, 32, beamed: “I’ve had better weeks! I don’t want to sleep because it feels like a dream.

“The moment I headed it, I knew it was going in. I don’t score often, so achieving it on such a monumental occasion is fantastic. It’s hard to articulate how amazing it feels.”

The towering defender is scheduled to join Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at St George’s Park today.

He expressed enthusiasm: “I’ll be the first one there at eight o’clock.”

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was pleasantly taken aback when Burn netted, considering his recent struggles during set-piece training.

Burn escaped his marker, Alexis Mac Allister, just before halftime to score from Kieran Trippier’s corner.

Howe noted: “We spent two weeks practicing set-pieces for this match. If you had seen our training, you would have thought we stood no chance.

“We were shocked that Dan Burn scored — he didn’t train like that! He was immense for us.”

Alexander Isak doubled the lead before Federico Chiesa netted a consolation goal.

This win marks Howe as the first English manager to secure major silverware since Harry Redknapp led Portsmouth to the FA Cup in 2008.

The emotional 47-year-old fought back tears as he dedicated the triumph to his late mother, Anne, who passed away in 2012.

Howe reflected: “Naturally, you think about the players, the staff, but also about those who are no longer with you. My mum and other family members come to mind.

“You acknowledge all the sacrifices and hard work they invested during your childhood to provide you with a good life.

“I’ve always aspired to make my family proud.”

Newcastle had not clinched a significant domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup.

Howe, whose team is set to return to European competitions next season, stated: “We were acutely aware of our history. We understood what this meant to our fans — we aimed to honor them and the club by winning this trophy.”

Isak, who netted the second goal, remarked: “We’ll see how the fans react and what this victory means to them when we get back to Newcastle.

“We all recognize how long it has been without a trophy for the fans.

“This is just the beginning.”
