Tributes Pour In for Pope Francis: African Bishops and the Global Faith Community Share Their Condolences
Accra – The Symposium of Episcopal Conferences of Africa and Madagascar (SECAM) (https://SECAM.org) alongside the entire church, Family of God in Africa and its Islands, has declared its solidarity with the “universal church” in mourning the loss of “our cherished Holy Father, Pope Francis.”
Pope Francis passed away earlier today, Monday, (21 April 2025), at his residence in the Vatican, Casa Santa Marta.
“Pope Francis has been more than just a shepherd to the universal church,” stated Fridolin Cardinal Ambongo, Archbishop of Kinshasa and president of SECAM.
“He has been an immense source of inspiration, especially for us in Africa.
“His steadfast dedication to social justice, peace, and the dignity of each human being resonated profoundly with our continent’s challenges and aspirations.
“Throughout his tenure, he made numerous visits to Africa, taking the time to understand our realities, listen to our stories, and elevate our voices on the global platform.”
The SECAM statement noted that Pope Francis’ visits to multiple countries across the continent instilled hope and love in countless individuals, reaffirming the church’s mission to embody a familial spirit.
In his encyclicals, especially “Fratelli Tutti,” Pope Francis advocated for the dignity of all, encouraging a culture of encounter and brotherhood.
“His commitment to environmental advocacy, grounded in a profound respect for our common home, along with his focus on dialogue, has inspired us to take action against the urgent issues confronting our communities today,” the statement emphasized.
“He bravely urged us to embrace the spirit of synodality, motivating all church members to journey together, listen to each other, and foster a more inclusive and loving community.
“As we contemplate his legacy during this period of mourning, we are reminded of the Easter promise of resurrection – a message of hope that transcends even death.
“We commemorate Pope Francis’s life by upholding his mission of love and service, aiming to create a church that is genuinely inclusive and a world that mirrors God’s kingdom.”
The statement concluded: “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the entire Catholic church and all those who were touched by his ministry and love.
“We encourage the faithful across Africa and Madagascar to unite in prayerful remembrance, expressing gratitude for the life and teachings of Pope Francis.
“May his soul find eternal peace, and may his lasting message guide us as we endeavor to cultivate a more just and loving world.
“In the hope of the Risen Christ.”
