STRESSFREE (2.45 Epsom, nap)
This horse has had a successful winter over hurdles, and trainer David O’Meara was pleased with his Flat return at Doncaster last month. He put forth a strong effort, finishing fourth in a large field, and would have been a contender for the win with a smoother trip. This five-year-old returns with the same handicap mark of 93, and while he has excelled in soft ground, he can handle the good conditions he will face on the Downs today. Danny Tudhope’s mount has a solid record on challenging tracks like Musselburgh and Chester, so should appreciate Epsom’s undulations.
DEVIL’S ADVOCATE (2.10 Epsom, nb)
John Gosden boasts an impressive history in this race, having secured seven wins since the dawn of the century. He aims to add to that impressive tally with this son of Too Darn Hot, who displayed remarkable speed when winning at Chelmsford last October. This performance built upon his debut third at Newmarket, where a mile was clearly too short for him. He is bred to thrive on this better ground and can make another notable advancement. However, hold off on making your Derby bets as the last winner of this event to go on to secure success in the Classic was long before World War II!
EMERALD ARMY (8.00 Thirsk, treble)
He displayed a lot of promise in his comeback victory over this distance earlier in the month. He mounted a late charge to clinch victory right at the finish, still having some energy in reserve. A 3lb rise in his rating should not hinder his chances in this modest event.
