Gauteng DPP Advocate Andrew Chauke Placed on Suspension

Pretoria – Advocate Andrew Chauke, the Director of Public Prosecutions for South Gauteng, has been suspended.

“In terms of section 14(3) read with 12(6)(a) of the National Prosecuting Authority Act, President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended Adv Andrew Chauke, the South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, with immediate effect, pending an inquiry into his fitness for office,” the Presidency announced late Monday, 21 July 2025.

“After requesting Adv Chauke to explain why he should not be suspended, President Ramaphosa concluded that suspension is the appropriate action while the inquiry takes place.”

The President has communicated his decision to Adv Chauke in writing, emphasizing the need for an independent evaluation of the issues at stake and the factual disputes involved.

“President Ramaphosa is concerned that Adv Chauke’s continued role as Director of Public Prosecutions, amidst serious allegations, could harm the reputation of the National Prosecuting Authority at large,” stated Vincent Magwenya, the President’s Spokesperson.

“Additionally, the President believes that Adv Chauke may struggle to perform his duties effectively while under scrutiny.”

In August 2023, Advocate Shamila Batohi, the head of the National Prosecuting Authority, formally urged President Ramaphosa to suspend Chauke, raising concerns about his involvement in various unsuccessful prosecutions.

Though the issue initially lost traction, it has now gained renewed urgency.
