Mngqithi Links Last Season’s Challenges to Experienced Players

Golden Arrows coach Manqoba Mngqithi has expressed his views on the team’s disappointing performance last season, pointing to an aging squad as a significant contributor to their struggles.

The Durban-based club had a tough 2024/25 season, concluding in 12th place in the Betway Premiership, narrowly avoiding relegation by just four points.

Returning to the Arrows after Miguel Cardoso’s appointment at Mamelodi Sundowns in December 2024, the 53-year-old coach, who guided Arrows to an MTN8 victory in 2009, acknowledged that the team’s average age affected their competitiveness.

“The primary concern was that the team was aging,” Mngqithi remarked.

“For a mid-table team, you need to be more dynamic and put in greater effort; those should be your foundational traits.”

“The team I am currently building at Arrows will certainly possess the right energy for the game. Fans can expect to see some exciting young talents, and I am eager to witness what they contribute.”

“They have improved significantly in a short period, and I am confident they will rekindle the excitement that Golden Arrows once brought. Supporters were attracted by the high-quality football.”

Mngqithi is optimistic that the revamped squad, strengthened by new signings, has the capability to produce noteworthy performances in the upcoming season.

“I believe they have the potential to deliver some, if not many, pleasant surprises this season thanks to their impressive preparation,” Mngqithi noted.

“We can only hope that the youngsters stay humble, as inconsistency and fame can occasionally be a distraction. However, I am dedicated to helping them achieve their best because there are many positive qualities.”

He concluded, “Trust me, the best way to understand what I’m saying is to come and witness it live.”

Golden Arrows will begin their league campaign against Siwelele FC at Dr Molemela Stadium this Saturday.
