President Cyril Ramaphosa Engages in Discussion with Russian Counterpart Vladimir Putin
Pretoria – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa engaged in a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin.
On Thursday, 7 August 2025, the Presidency announced that the two leaders had discussions earlier “this afternoon.”
Vincent Magwenya, the President’s spokesperson, stated: “The conversation followed President Putin’s request to update President Ramaphosa on the peace process regarding Ukraine and to discuss matters of shared bilateral interest.”
Magwenya added: “President Putin acknowledged and appreciated South Africa’s efforts in promoting a peace process between Russia and Ukraine.”
“President Ramaphosa welcomed the briefing and affirmed South Africa’s full support for peace initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and fostering lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine.”
Magwenya mentioned that the two leaders agreed to continue their discussions on enhancing the strategic relationship between their nations.
Meanwhile, reports from Moscow indicate that President Putin intends to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in the near future.
The Kremlin has stated that these talks are likely to take place in the United Arab Emirates.
