Mbokazi Credits Half-Time Discussion for Pirates’ MTN8 Comeback

Mbekezeli Mbokazi, the strong vice-captain of Orlando Pirates, revealed that a crucial half-time conversation was the key factor that allowed the team to come back and earn a draw against Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the MTN8 semifinal.

Pirates trailed in the first half due to a powerful header from Teboho Mokoena at Orlando Stadium. Nevertheless, the team demonstrated resilience in the second half, with Mbokazi playing a critical role in the equalizing goal.

The Sundowns’ strategy of playing deep to create an offside trap was effectively countered by a long ball from Mbokazi.

This pass found Kamogela Sebelebele, who sprinted past the defense and skillfully slotted the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to equalize. From that point, Abdelsam Ouaddou’s side began to dominate, leaving Sundowns struggling to maintain their defense.

“It was indeed a tough game,” Mbokazi commented.

“The match was demanding, but we kept pushing. In our half-time talk with the coach and technical staff, they provided guidance on what we needed to reverse the situation, and we drew strength from their advice.”

He highlighted that the team inspired one another by declaring it “wasn’t over for us.” “We achieved the goal through sheer determination. We supported each other in every aspect of the game,” he noted.

The contest attracted a full house at the Soweto stadium.

“We appreciate our fans for showing up in such great numbers, and we hope they continue to support us as we strive for success,” said Mbokazi, who took on the captain’s role in place of the injured Nkosinathi Sibisi. “Witnessing their strong turnout encourages us to fight back in this match.”

The Buccaneers, with Mbokazi anchoring the defense, aim to maintain their second-half momentum into the second leg against Sundowns at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

Pirates are the reigning champions of the MTN8, having won the title for the third consecutive year. If they can triumph over Sundowns, they will face the winner of the other semifinal matchup between Sekhukhune United and Stellenbosch in the final on September 13.
