Ouaddou Stresses the Importance of a Strong Team for Competing at Every Level
Head coach Abdelsam Ouaddou of Orlando Pirates underscores the importance of building a united and resilient team for success in major competitions, especially as the Soweto club tackles PSL, CAF Champions League, and local cup challenges.
Last month, the Buccaneers successfully defended their MTN8 title and climbed to third place in the Betway Premiership, following a strong 2-0 victory against TS Galaxy at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Currently, Pirates have accumulated 15 points from seven matches, sitting six points behind Mamelodi Sundowns, although the defending champions have played three extra games. They are also five points adrift of Sekhukhune United, who have played two additional matches.
On the continental front, Pirates advanced to the second round of the CAF Champions League after dominating Lesotho’s Lioli with a 7-0 aggregate score, giving Ouaddou the chance to make adjustments to his squad.
Looking ahead, the Buccaneers will prepare for the Carling Knockout round of 16, where they are set to host Siwelele at Orlando Stadium this Saturday (15:00).

Having taken the reins of Pirates in the off-season, Ouaddou emphasized the importance of team depth and unity.
“To me, winning requires more than just 11 players; a cohesive group is vital for claiming the league title and excelling in prestigious tournaments,” Ouaddou stated.
“Moreover, when I join a new club, my priority isn’t immediately tactical, but rather to embed core values. These principles provide the foundation for all efforts. Without strong values, the whole initiative risks losing momentum mid-season.”
With a busy schedule ahead, Ouaddou believes Pirates’ success will depend on their collective mentality, physical fitness, and discipline as they aim to challenge Sundowns for league glory while also making a strong impact in Africa.
