Ex-Chelsea and Tottenham Star Coaching in South Korea, Supported by Son Transitioning from Football to Bodybuilding

GUS POYET has journeyed through various terrains as both a player and a coach, with his most recent expedition leading him to South Korea.

At Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, he’s accompanied by his son Diego, a former footballer whose transformation into an impressive physique has made him nearly unrecognizable compared to his playing days.

The father-son pair is proving to be quite the dynamic collaboration.

Jeonbuk is on the cusp of securing their first K League title in four years, currently holding a commanding 13-point lead with only six matches remaining.

Poyet took charge on Christmas Eve last year, making a notable impact in just ten months.

The Uruguayan is a Premier League legend, having spent seven memorable years in London with Chelsea and Tottenham.

He dedicated the first nine years of his managerial career to England.

Commencing with roles at Swindon, Leeds, and Spurs, Poyet subsequently took over at Brighton, where he guided them from League One to the Championship play-offs.

This was followed by a spell at Sunderland, after which the 57-year-old sought fresh challenges in Greece, Spain, China, France, and Chile.

Poyet expresses his appreciation for having his son Diego alongside him in South Korea, providing honest insights.

Diego, now 30, played professionally for clubs such as Charlton and West Ham before retiring in 2018 due to a stalled career.

The young coach has dramatically transformed his physique, now resembling a bodybuilder since stepping away from the pitch.

Despite not having the physique of a football player, he retains a keen footballing mind.

Poyet Sr. shared with the Daily Star: “He continues to think like a player and analyzes the game as if he were still on the pitch, reflecting on what he used to do.

“Even at his young age, he understands my expectations, which makes our collaboration seamless. He never responds with ‘I don’t know.’

“Instead, he always provides feedback, even if it contrasts with my viewpoint, which is advantageous for both my approach and for the team. I look for staff capable of offering me candid insights.”
