Police Officer Who Fatally Shot Female Sergeant Turns Gun on Himself
Johannesburg – The search for a police sergeant from the Presidential Protection Service, wanted for the murder of a policewoman over the weekend and for wounding his wife, ended in further tragedy as the fugitive took his own life.
The 53-year-old sergeant, hailing from Riba Cross, Burgersfort, Limpopo, ended his life after being cornered by police along the R555 road on Sunday, 12 October 2025.
The R555 serves as a route connecting Springs to Ohrigstad, passing through Delmas, Ogies, Witbank, Middelburg, Stoffberg, and Burgersfort.
Reports indicate that on Saturday, 11 October 2025, the sergeant fatally shot a female police sergeant in Pretoria.
On the following morning, he shot and wounded his wife in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng, before fleeing the scene.
Describing the events surrounding the manhunt, police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba stated: “Based on intelligence regarding his movements, Limpopo police intercepted the white Nissan vehicle he was driving.
“The suspect reportedly discharged a firearm towards the police officers and, upon being cornered, turned the gun on himself.
“The weapon used was confirmed to be a state-issued service pistol.”
The unnamed sergeant shot himself near Burgersfort.
Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commented on the tragedy, saying: “This incident highlights the urgent need for individuals to seek help when dealing with personal issues.
“We are dedicated to supporting our members’ well-being while upholding the law.”
Colonel Ledwaba mentioned that an inquest case has been opened and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified regarding the tragic shooting incidents.
IPID is tasked with investigating cases of death, rape, torture, and assault involving police officers.
