President Ramaphosa Expresses Condolences Over 42 Lives Lost in Limpopo Bus Accident
Pretoria – President Cyril Ramaphosa has shared his heartfelt condolences with the nations of Zimbabwe and Malawi, mourning the loss of their citizens in a bus accident that occurred near Makhado, Limpopo.
At least 42 passengers tragically lost their lives in the incident on the N1 on Sunday, 12 October 2025, while traveling home from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.
“President Ramaphosa’s thoughts are with the families, friends, and colleagues of those who have passed away, as he wishes for a prompt and complete recovery for the many who were injured,” stated Vincent Magwenya, Spokesperson for the President.
Reflecting on the devastating bus crash, President Ramaphosa remarked: “This tragedy is a significant loss not only for South Africa but also for our sister nations, Zimbabwe and Malawi. It’s particularly sorrowful that this incident occurred during our annual Transport Month, where we emphasize road safety.”

“It is essential for all of us—road users, transport operators, drivers, and passengers—to commit to safety and responsibly share our roads with care for one another.”
Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mr. Mkhuleko Hlengwa expressed their profound sadness over the tragic loss of 42 lives and the injuries sustained by 49 passengers in this catastrophic accident.
They extended their sincere condolences to the grieving families and wished a swift recovery for the injured individuals.
Eyewitness reports indicated that the casualties included 42 victims, comprising seven children, 17 adult males, and 18 adult females.
The Democratic Alliance has also conveyed its sympathies.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and families of the deceased during this extremely challenging period, and we hope for a full recovery for those injured,” the DA stated.
The DA has called for a thorough investigation into accidents occurring on mountain passes in Limpopo.
Currently, the N1 is closed in both directions; motorists traveling between Musina and Louis Trichardt are advised to take alternative routes via the Witvlag and Williespoort roads.
