Ramaphosa Disclaims Knowledge of Tembisa Hospital Looting Suspect Hangwani Maumela, Calls Viral Video ‘Coincidental’

President Cyril Ramaphosa has dismissed assertions connecting him to businessman Hangwani Maumela, who is alleged to be at the center of a R2 billion corruption scandal linked to Tembisa Hospital.

This follows the emergence of a video showing Ramaphosa outside Maumela’s opulent Sandton residence, which was recently searched by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). The President’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, clarified that the video was “entirely coincidental” and unrelated to Maumela.

“President Ramaphosa enjoys walking whenever he has the opportunity. He had asked Mr Sibiya to join him for a stroll. They happened to pass by a house, now famously known as Maumela’s residence,” Magwenya elaborated. “While they were in front of this house, they were approached by Tbo Touch, accompanied by Bishop Noel Jones. They took some pictures, and a video exists as well.”

Magwenya further mentioned that Ramaphosa “was unaware the house belonged to Maumela” and that he “frequently walks and drives through that area as it is close to his Hyde Park residence.”

SIU Confiscates Luxury Vehicles and Properties Valued in Millions

The SIU conducted a search at Maumela’s Sandhurst mansion last week as part of an initiative to recover assets connected to the alleged fraud at Tembisa Hospital. Investigators suspect Maumela to be at the helm of one of three significant syndicates that misappropriated public healthcare funds through fraudulent contracts, inflated pricing, and fictitious deliveries.

Among the items confiscated were three Lamborghinis, designer furniture, high-value artwork, and other belongings. The total value of the assets preserved amounts to R133.5 million, with R900 million anticipated for recovery.

According to the SIU, Maumela allegedly utilized 41 companies to divert R820 million from Tembisa Hospital within two years. The larger investigation has revealed over R2 billion in misappropriated public funds.

Sources indicate that Maumela has not been seen at the property since the SIU raid last Thursday. Public records show that the residence—constructed on two combined plots valued at R86 million—was acquired via the MHR Maumela Family Trust.

The three-storey house features multiple wings, infinity pools, well-kept gardens, a car wash, and even a personal hair salon. Neighbors describe the upscale neighborhood as tranquil and crime-free, hosting several prominent individuals, including EFF leader Julius Malema.

Magwenya stressed that Ramaphosa has no personal or business ties to Maumela, asserting: “He is merely distantly related since he was once married to Maumela’s aunt.” He further explained that prior to becoming Deputy President in 2014, Ramaphosa instructed his immediate family to cease all government-related business involvements.
