Youth Day: No School on Monday and Tuesday; Extra Holiday Announced by Department

Pretoria – The Department of Basic Education has declared that tomorrow, Monday, 15 June 2026, will be a special school holiday.

In a brief announcement issued to The Bulrushes, the department stated it “wants to remind parents, guardians, learners, educators, and all education stakeholders that Monday, 15 June 2026, has been set as a special school holiday according to the approved 2026 school calendar.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the events of 16 June 1976, a pivotal moment in South Africa’s history, celebrated annually through Youth Day on 16 June.

“Since Tuesday, 16 June 2026, is a nationally recognized public holiday, schools nationwide will be closed on both Monday, 15 June 2026, and Tuesday, 16 June 2026,” the announcement indicated.

“Teaching and learning activities will recommence on Wednesday, 17 June 2026.”

The announcement further noted: “As the nation observes this significant milestone in its history, learners, educators, and school communities are urged to commemorate the event safely and responsibly.

“A successful return to school on Wednesday, 17 June 2026, will ensure that teaching and learning remain uninterrupted as the academic term progresses towards its conclusion on 26 June 2026.”
