Businessman Manamalala Phasha Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison for R1.3 Million Crushed Stone Theft

Polokwane – After a decade of investigations and a court trial, 65-year-old businessman Manamalala Stephen Phasha has been sentenced to prison for the theft of crushed stones valued at around R1.3 million.

On Wednesday, 12 August 2026, the Sekhukhune Regional Court handed down a four-year prison sentence to Phasha.

The case dates back to 2011, when crushed stones meant for road construction were unlawfully removed from a site in Ga-Nkwana Village, Sekhukhune.

The initial report was made to the Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) due to concerns about the removal of the stones left at the construction site.

RAL then initiated a case, which was forwarded to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team for thorough examination.

Through a comprehensive investigation, Hawks investigators discovered that Phasha, operating under Phasha General Trading CC, had extracted crushed stones worth approximately R1.3 million without the necessary authorization or compliance with RAL’s established processes.

On 1 June 2016, the Hawks apprehended Phasha, who was later convicted on 13 May 2024.

The case continued through the criminal justice system until final sentencing on 12 August 2026.
