South African Airways Suspends Interim CEO Matshela Seshibe

Johannesburg – Merely four months after his appointment, Matshela Seshibe, the acting CEO of South African Airways (SAA), has been placed on special leave.

Seshibe took on the role earlier this year in April following the unexpected resignation of former CEO John Lamola.

On Friday, 14 August 2026, the SAA board confirmed that Seshibe has been put on special leave.

While the airline did not elaborate on the reasons behind this decision, it stated that Seshibe would undergo an internal process.

In the meantime, the airline’s board has appointed Koekie Mbeki, the chief legal officer, to serve as the acting CEO.
