“The arrival of over one million international tourists in August showcases the demand for South Africa,” she stated.
The United States remained the largest overseas market for South Africa in August, contributing 37,134 tourists, followed by the United Kingdom with 25,749 and Germany with 14,731.
The latest statistics reflect what the department termed resilient growth during the first half of 2026. According to UN Tourism, South Africa experienced a 12% increase in international tourist arrivals in the first six months of the year compared to the same timeframe in 2025.
Furthermore, UN Tourism recognized South Africa as one of the top 20 best-performing destinations globally among those reporting data for the first half of 2026.
De Lille noted that the current focus should be on enhancing tourism’s economic contributions by broadening the variety of products and experiences offered to visitors. “Our goal must now be to transform that demand into investment, employment, and economic opportunities,” she remarked.
