Chiefs Officially Sign Velebayi – Sportswire
Finally, Kaizer Chiefs have secured the signing of Asanele Velebayi after a prolonged dispute with Cape Town Spurs, resolved by the PSL’s Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC) on Monday.
Although it was initially anticipated that Velebayi would be unveiled on Wednesday, the announcement arrived earlier than forecasted. The Amakhosi have had their sights set on Velebayi since the start of the last season, but Spurs were reluctant to part ways with their key player.
The disagreement arose after Spurs suffered relegation from the Motsepe Foundation Championship to the ABC Motsepe Regional League. They argued that Velebayi still had a professional contract despite the club’s drop from the professional leagues (the Betway Premiership and Motsepe Foundation Championship). Velebayi took his case to the PSL DRC, seeking to be freed as a free agent, and was successful.
“Chiefs warmly welcome Velebayi to Naturena,” announced the club. “We are delighted to confirm the signing of Asanele Velebayi. The Cape Town winger has signed a long-term contract with the Club. Welcome to the Kaizer Chiefs family.”
The Chiefs are now focusing on concluding the signing of Luke Baartman, regarding whom Spurs are also disputing the terms of his departure. Spurs believe they deserve a transfer fee instead of allowing him to depart for free, as was the case with Velebayi. Baartman’s PSL DRC hearing is forthcoming, and if he too wins his case against Spurs, he is expected to join the Amakhosi as well.
