Fatal Collision Between Police Van and Truck on R101 in Limpopo: Death Toll Increases to 9
Polokwane – The number of fatalities from the accident involving a police van and an articulated truck along the R101 Road between Mokopane and Mookgopong in Limpopo has increased to nine.
The police van was carrying inmates when the tragedy occurred on Thursday, 14 August 2025.
Initial reports indicated that five inmates and a police officer died at the scene of the collision. Several other individuals sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital.

In an update regarding those injured, Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba reported on Saturday, 16 August 2025, that the death toll from the tragic incident had increased.
The initial count of fatalities on the day of the collision stood at six inmates and one police officer.
“Two additional inmates, who had been hospitalized after the collision, tragically succumbed to their injuries on Friday, 15 August 2025, raising the total fatalities to nine—one police officer and eight inmates,” Brigadier Mashaba stated.
The remaining injured inmates continue to receive medical care.
“The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has once again extended condolences to the affected families and wishes a speedy recovery to the injured inmates,” the spokesperson remarked.
The Provincial Commissioner also reaffirmed SAPS’s commitment to conducting a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the precise cause of the accident that resulted in the fatalities.
