Story Introduces IP Vault: A Programmable Solution for On-Chain IP Data Access
Story Foundation has revealed the forthcoming launch of secure on-chain storage for assets related to intellectual property, which will enable programmable access and monetization.
Summary
- Story Foundation has announced the impending introduction of IP Vault, an on-chain storage solution for sensitive intellectual property content.
- The Vault is set to go live later this year, beginning with a devnet before transitioning to a testnet and mainnet in 2026.
In February, Story Protocol launched its layer-1 network for programmable intellectual property and has now expanded its ecosystem with the new IP Vault. Backed by Andreessen Horowitz, this project facilitates the tokenization, licensing, and monetization of IP assets directly on-chain without the need for intermediaries.
With the increase in adoption and integration, the ecosystem faces challenges in accessing and securely storing sensitive IP content. The Story Foundation believes that IP Vault will address these concerns for large enterprises, IP owners, and ecosystem developers.
“IP Vault is a secure on-chain storage space linked to IP assets, preserving confidential IP data within Story. Access to these vaults is restricted to IP owners and their licensees,” the Story Foundation stated in a blog entry.
What are the use cases?
The Vault will securely store encryption keys needed to unlock files hosted on platforms like IPFS and Shelby, according to Story Foundation.
This functionality will act as a programmable access layer for intellectual property assets, with IP being natively accessible on-chain through Story (IP)’s layer-1 blockchain.
As a private storage solution, the Vault will not only provide secure storage for encryption keys but also enable conditional decryption, empowering IP owners to define rules that must be satisfied before content can be decrypted. This opens up new monetization avenues in the IP market, particularly relating to artificial intelligence and real-world assets.
Real-world applications include Poseidon, an AI-centric initiative supported by a16z and incubated by Story. This platform will utilize IP Vault to safeguard its AI training data.
“As a comprehensive data layer, Poseidon connects supply and demand for specialized, IP-cleared training data. IP Vault provides secure access to these datasets along with their respective IP assets on-chain,” remarked Sandeep Chinchali, co-founder of Poseidon.
Story plans to roll out IP Vault on devnet later this year, with testnet and mainnet launches anticipated in 2026.
