Police Conduct Raids at 26 Locations in Cape Town for R1.6 Billion Municipal Fraud Investigation
Police in the Western Cape have initiated an extensive search and seizure operation throughout Cape Town, as part of an inquiry into allegations of fraud and corruption involving municipal contracts totaling R1.6 billion.
The raids commenced on Tuesday, with officers targeting 26 various locations, including the private residences of municipal officials, business sites, and addresses associated with individuals and companies that received contracts from the City of Cape Town.

Whistleblower Tips Lead to Police Action
According to Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Andre Traut, the operation was set in motion by a whistleblower’s information and subsequent preliminary investigations carried out by both the municipality and the police.
“The operation, arising from the whistleblower’s tip and preliminary inquiry, seeks to gather essential evidence to determine the extent of the alleged irregularities. SAPS has reaffirmed its dedication to combating corruption and safeguarding public resources, urging the community to allow the necessary space for their operations,” Traut elaborated.

City of Cape Town spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo confirmed the municipality’s prompt action, aligning with its anti-corruption policy.
“In accordance with the City’s zero tolerance policy toward fraud and corruption, city forensic services acted promptly to evaluate and report the issue to SAPS, which conducted search and seizure operations at various sites, including business locations, municipal buildings, and private homes. Further details will be released by SAPS as the investigation unfolds,” Tyhalibongo noted.
The inquiry is ongoing, with more information anticipated as police scrutinize the materials obtained during the operation.
