Cloudy Water: Temporary Shutdown of Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant
Pretoria – The City of Tshwane has announced a temporary shutdown of the Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Plant due to heavy rainfall affecting the quality of raw water.
The facility was taken offline on Tuesday, 5 May 2026, as recent rainfall led to elevated turbidity levels, resulting in cloudy water that cannot be treated safely under standard conditions.
This interruption has impacted the water supply to Bronkhorstspruit Town, Zithobeni, Ekandustria, Ekangala, Rethabiseng, and portions of the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality that depend on the Bronkhorstspruit system.
City officials mentioned that process controllers are actively monitoring the water quality and operations at the plant. Production will resume once conditions improve and treatment standards can be safely achieved.
“The City of Tshwane apologises for the inconvenience and appreciates residents’ patience, understanding, and cooperation during this time,” stated the municipality in a release.
