Former Botswana President Festus Mogae Laid to Rest in Gaborone

Gaborone – The atmosphere was heavy with sorrow at the University of Botswana Indoor Sports Centre in Gaborone, where friends and family gathered to pay their respects to the late former president, Festus Gontebanye Mogae.

Mogae passed away last week at the age of 86.

He was the third president of Botswana, serving a decade-long term that began in 1998.

The former leader was celebrated as a disciplined figure, a true patriot, and a statesman who conducted the office of the Presidency with dignity, restraint, and a steadfast commitment to Botswana.

In a eulogy delivered on Saturday, 16 May 2026, Botswana President Duma Boko noted that during Mogae’s presidency, he ensured the stability of Botswana’s democracy, reinforced the credibility of its institutions, and enhanced the nation’s international standing.

President Duma emphasized that Mogae’s legacy is deeply rooted in Botswana’s history.

His contributions will continue to motivate future generations.

“I stand here today, in this solemn assembly, to join the voices celebrating our departed leader and statesman,” President Boko expressed.

“These humble words are a tribute to the memory of this remarkable man.

“Today, we lay to rest our former president, the third president of the Republic of Botswana, Festus Gontebanye Mogae.

“Upon hearing of his passing, I was reminded of the words of Joseph Conrad: ‘He won’t be forgotten. Whatever he was, he was not common’.”

Following the service, the late president’s cortege made its way from the University of Botswana to Phomolong Memorial Park in Gaborone, where he was laid to rest.

Numerous heads of state and dignitaries attended to pay their respects.

South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile attended the service on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa, while Eswatini Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla represented King Mswati III.

Former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe and former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete were also present among the mourners.
