Toyota Hilux Sets World Record at Massive Nampo Gathering
Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has successfully reclaimed the local prestige of its flagship bakkie by orchestrating the largest ever gathering of Hilux vehicles at the 2026 Nampo Harvest Day.
A remarkable 1,545 Hilux vehicles gathered at the agricultural festival, surpassing the previous global record of 1,440 units. This achievement restores a world title previously held by Toyota after a significant mass gathering at the Atlantis Dunes in Cape Town.
This record-breaking assembly was the highlight of Toyota’s inaugural dynamic Hilux Showcase at the event, attracting hundreds of brand enthusiasts from all over the nation.
Leon Theron, senior vice president of sales and marketing at TSAM, emphasized the magnitude of this collective effort: “The record-breaking celebration was an incredibly unforgettable day. We aimed to make history, and our Hilux community came together from across South Africa. This event transcended mere record attempts; it was about celebrating the lasting legacy of the Hilux and the strong community that supports it.”

The gathering also served as a live exhibit showcasing the bakkie’s history in South Africa since its debut in 1969. Among the vehicles featured was an early 1970s model, alongside a high-mileage Hilux that has officially surpassed one million kilometres on its odometer.

Four additional world records pending confirmation
Toyota’s historic presence at Nampo may extend even further. The manufacturer confirmed that it made four additional attempts for Guinness World Records during the festival. These results are currently undergoing formal review and will be publicly announced once officially validated.
For Toyota, the impressive turnout underscores how deeply the locally produced utility vehicle is entrenched in the driving culture of the country.
“Our customers form our community, and their active participation reaffirmed that the Hilux is more than just a vehicle. It is a legacy that is authentically South African – one built for generations, woven into families, communities, and shared experiences,” Theron concluded.
