Botswana Honors Former President Festus Mogae
Gaborone – Today, family members, dignitaries, and members of the public gathered at Parliament in Gaborone to pay tribute to former President of Botswana, Festus Mogae, whose body is currently lying in state.
Widow Barbara Mogae, accompanied by relatives, joined Acting President Ndaba Gaolathe and Parliament Speaker Dithapelo Keorapetse on Wednesday, May 13, to honor the late leader.
Mogae, who served as President of Botswana from 1998 to 2008, passed away last week at the age of 86.
A state funeral has been arranged for him, set to take place on Saturday, 16 May 2026.
This event is part of the schedule for the state funeral of the esteemed statesman.
In an official statement, the Botswana government announced: “The body of the former president, His Excellency Festus Gontebanye Mogae, is currently lying in state at Parliament in Gaborone.”
“This event is part of the state funeral program for the late statesman.
“Members of the public are invited to view the body and pay their final respects until 6pm.”
