Madlanga Commission Findings Result in Arrest of Senior Municipal Official
Pretoria – Authorities have taken a 50-year-old senior municipal officer into custody on charges of fraud, corruption, and hindering the course of justice.
The official was apprehended by a unit referred to as the “Madlanga Commission Task Team,” indicating that the alleged offenses were uncovered during the ongoing Madlanga Commission of inquiry.
On Saturday, 18 April 2026, police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe announced, “The official was arrested this morning at his residence in Gauteng.”
Brigadier Mathe further stated, “The Task Team is actively pursuing additional suspects connected to the investigation.”
“These arrests are a result of an ongoing investigation into corruption within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.”
The spokesperson for the police mentioned that no additional comments would be made regarding the specifics of the case at this time.
While the police did not disclose the suspect’s identity, the SABC reports that the individual detained is the suspended Deputy Commissioner of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, Julius Mkhwanazi.
This arrest followed a challenging week for Mkhwanazi, who was subjected to intense questioning by the Madlanga Commission regarding his alleged participation in serious crimes, including murder and robbery.
Mkhwanazi, who frequently claimed memory lapses, appeared visibly distressed when incriminating audio and video evidence was presented during the questioning.
The detained official is anticipated to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 April 2026.
