Two Independent Law Firms Appointed to Investigate Scandal Surrounding Home Affairs AI Policy Document
The Department of Home Affairs has engaged two independent law firms to examine its policy documents after it was found that Artificial Intelligence (AI) had been utilized to create citations in a significant government document.
This decision follows the suspension of two senior officials when AI-generated references were detected in a Cabinet-approved updated white paper concerning citizenship, immigration, and refugee protection.

In an official announcement, the department noted that the questionable citations seem to have been included after the main document was finalized.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber expressed regret, recognizing a failure in oversight after it was revealed that the reference section of the policy document was generated using AI tools.
Despite the backlash, the department has emphasized that the main content of the document is intact, with only the references identified as problematic.
Two senior officials have been suspended for creating the AI-generated reference list, while a third has faced repercussions for inadequate supervision during the process.

To tackle the matter, two independent law firms have been tasked with overseeing disciplinary actions and conducting a thorough review of all policy documents produced by the department since 2022.
