Greetings, everyone!

Indeed, regulations are in place, and for those remarking “he violated the rules,” I wish you a pleasant day and resilience moving forward.

It never fails to baffle me how certain topics in the horse racing community become magnified.

A recent incident in South Africa featured jockey Luyolo Mxothwa, who faced significant repercussions for what seems an inconsequential issue.

Despite boasting an impressive resume with around 800 wins and eight Group 1 titles, Mxothwa now faces a five-year racing ban.

What was his infraction?

It was this…

1. Sometime around December 2025 or early January 2026, he sent a voice message to an unnamed individual stating: “The thing is, I don’t know the horse; if it were one I knew, I could easily confirm. It’s a newcomer, and it’s a weak field, but I spoke to the trainer of the other horse who indicated that Zackey will win the race. So, let’s see what happens. Yeah, let’s do it. Chat later.”

In turn, ‘Zackey,’ also known as Craig Zackey, rode Champagne Problems to victory at 8-13 odds.

Meanwhile, Mxothwa competed in the same race, finishing sixth on his horse, which had 9-1 odds.

What’s your take on this? To me, it sounds more like Mxothwa simply discussing his chances.

His response boiled down to: “I’m unfamiliar with my horse. It’s a challenging race, but the team behind Zackey appears confident. We’ll take a shot and see what unfolds.”

Of course, in South Africa, authorities may interpret that as ‘insider information.’

But come on.

Upholding rules is one thing; administering severe penalties is another.

A mild reprimand would have been adequate.

But a five-year ban? Outrageous.

It’s not as if Mxothwa declared: “Zackey’s team believes they will win, and trust me, I’ll make sure mine doesn’t.”

In actuality, it’s almost the opposite.

And this saga isn’t over yet.

The South African Horseracing Authority has additional plans for him!

While three of the five years are suspended, he faces specific compliance requirements immediately.

The suspended term hinges on his adherence to seven conditions designed to uphold racing integrity and assist investigations into illicit activities.

Among these conditions is a mandatory disclosure deadline of May 28.

He must notify the NHA Chief Executive Officer in writing about all pertinent details regarding illicit or unethical practices in horse racing, including any approaches by bookmakers, punters, or others seeking confidential race information.

Notably, the sanction mentions Noor Iqbal and Zahir Ali as individuals suspected of participating in illegal betting activities.

And here’s the fascinating part.

Within 30 days, Mxothwa must release a media statement approved by the NHA, expressing remorse for his actions and urging fellow jockeys to report any attempts at soliciting confidential race information.

The authority has also arranged for him to speak directly to South African jockeys about the gravity of these prohibited practices and the necessity of reporting any improper approaches.

All this over a message that conveyed very little. Incredible.
