Lt-Gen Puleng Dimpane Named Acting National Police Commissioner

Pretoria – President Cyril Ramaphosa has designated Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane as the Acting National Commissioner of Police.

This appointment was made on Thursday, 23 April 2026, shortly after President Ramaphosa revealed that National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola had been placed on precautionary leave.

Earlier this week, General Masemola appeared in court facing four charges for violating the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) related to a questionable tender awarded to Medicare 24, a company owned by businessman Vusi “Cat” Matlala, who is currently facing criminal allegations.

Accompanied by Acting Police Minister, Professor Firoz Cachalia, President Ramaphosa stated: “Given the gravity of these charges and the essential role of the National Commissioner in combating crime, I have concurred with General Masemola that he will be considered under precautionary suspension until the case’s resolution.

“To maintain stability and continuity within the South African Police Service, I have appointed Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane as the Acting National Commissioner of Police.”

Lt-Gen Dimpane currently serves as the Divisional Commissioner for Financial Management Services within the SAPS and boasts a long-standing and commendable career both in the SAPS and other public entities.

With nearly two decades in the police force, she brings extensive expertise in policing, strategic management, financial oversight, and governance. Lt-Gen Dimpane is known for her professionalism and integrity.

“I am confident that she possesses the necessary qualities and stature to provide effective leadership to the SAPS during this challenging time,” said President Ramaphosa.

Lt-Gen Dimpane will be backed by a robust team of experienced and committed police leadership across the nation.
