De Jong Poised for Dream Debut in Soweto Derby
Orlando Pirates striker Andre de Jong has shared his anticipation ahead of the upcoming Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs.
The highly anticipated, sold-out clash is set for this Sunday at FNB Stadium. De Jong aims to make his debut in this legendary matchup, having only been a substitute during their previous encounter this season, where the Pirates triumphed 3–0 back in February.
The New Zealand-born forward expects a thrilling contest between the two rivals. He stressed that the Pirates are determined to secure a victory as they continue to compete for the title against Mamelodi Sundowns, who are trailing them by just one point.
“It’s going to be an exciting match. Both teams are coming off strong performances and carry confidence into this game,” De Jong noted.
“Given how the last derby unfolded, it was a fantastic day for our club, and we intend to replicate that success on Sunday. We understand that we must not underestimate them, as every match in the Betway Premiership poses difficult challenges.”

De Jong, who joined the Pirates from Stellenbosch during the January transfer window, has played in eight matches so far, scoring one goal.
“The derby atmosphere, coupled with ninety thousand supporters, makes for an electrifying experience. However, we have successfully handled such high-pressure situations this season and aim to keep doing so to stay in the title race,” he added.
The former AmaZulu player also reflected on his first derby experience as an unused substitute.
“My initial derby experience was incredible, even just being there,” he recalled.
“Watching from the bench and soaking up the energy from the stadium, with fans from both sides, was truly special. There were many happy faces among the Pirates fans that day, and it felt amazing to be part of it.”
“Throughout my time with Royal AM, AmaZulu, and Stellenbosch, I always dreamt of taking part in such a significant match.”
De Jong is eager to make his mark on the field as the Pirates go up against the Glamour Boys, who will be eager to avoid another defeat to their rivals.
Meanwhile, the Pirates are looking for a win to strengthen their position at the top of the league.
“I hope to step onto the field on Sunday and feel it firsthand. It’s a remarkable match to be involved in, and I’m truly looking forward to it,” he concluded.
