From Durban to Naturena: The “Telepathic” Midfield Pair Transforming Chiefs

Khalil Ben Youssef, co-coach of Kaizer Chiefs, has highlighted the growing influence of Siphesihle Ndlovu and Lebohang Maboe, praising their strong on-field synergy and crucial role in revitalizing Amakhosi’s midfield this season.

The duo teamed up at Naturena at the start of the current season, marking a new chapter in a partnership that has matured over the years.

Ndlovu and Maboe initially developed their chemistry at Durban City, formerly Maritzburg United, from 2016 to 2018, where their midfield collaboration caught national attention. They later followed different trajectories, with Maboe moving to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2018 and Ndlovu joining Orlando Pirates in 2019.

Last season, they briefly reunited at SuperSport United, where Maboe was on loan.

Now back at Chiefs, the pair appears to have rediscovered their form. Ndlovu has scored two goals, provided one assist, and received a Man of the Match award, while Maboe—despite not registering goals or assists—has been instrumental, earning five Man of the Match accolades.

Their growing impact was once again on display in the Chiefs’ 1–1 draw against Orlando Pirates in the prestigious Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Sunday, where both players demonstrated composure in a high-pressure environment.

“I believe Ndlovu and Maboe are forming a solid partnership, and they have developed a great understanding,” Ben Youssef stated.

“Their movements indicate a keen awareness of how to play effectively and make timely transitions.”

“What stands out most is their intelligence; both contribute positively on both defensive and offensive fronts.”

In addition to their midfield efforts, the Tunisian coach praised captain and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen for his exceptional performance.

Ben Youssef believes that the shot-stopper, alongside Maboe, Thabiso Monyane, and Bradley Cross, should be considered for national selection ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“It wasn’t just Petersen who shined. Many players were putting pressure on coaching regarding selection, which will make choices difficult,” he added.

“Petersen performed outstandingly, and even before his injury, he was in great form. He is working intensively with his goalkeeper coach, Ilyes Mzoughi, and I firmly believe he deserves a national team call-up.”

“I also think that Thabiso Monyane, Cross, and Maboe should receive national team invitations. It’s high time Kaizer Chiefs players are considered for the national side.”

Amakhosi will now set their sights on their next league encounter against Siwelele at Toyota Stadium on Wednesday, aiming for Ndlovu and Maboe—along with Petersen, Cross, and Monyane—to maintain their stellar performances while vying for national team inclusion.
