Cardoso Supports Mothiba Following Panenka Miss

Mamelodi Sundowns manager Miguel Cardoso has defended Lebo Mothiba’s Panenka penalty attempt, which was saved by Polokwane City goalkeeper Lindokuhle Mathebula, highlighting that the former Bafana Bafana forward is a proven penalty shooter.

Mothiba, who came on in the second half during Sundowns’ win against Polokwane City at Seshego Stadium on Wednesday, had his Panenka effort blocked by Mathebula, who reacted swiftly to thwart the attempt.

Despite the missed penalty, Mothiba brought significant energy after his introduction, proving to be a formidable presence as he aimed to impact the match for Sundowns.

He played a crucial role in the match-winning goal, assisting Marcelo Allende, who delivered a low, powerful shot past Mathebula to secure the win and propel Sundowns to the top of the Betway Premiership standings.

Sundowns now hold 61 points, maintaining a two-point lead over second-placed Orlando Pirates, with both teams having completed 26 matches.

This win also ended a run of two consecutive draws against Stellenbosch and Richards Bay.

“I was looking back and a bit to the sky,” Cardoso stated.

“I must confess I didn’t fully comprehend what transpired. I think the goalkeeper was diving in the other direction, which might have led him to aim there. Look, Lebo is an excellent penalty taker—very reliable.

“If he didn’t score today, it’s not due to a lack of effort, but simply because it didn’t happen. It is what it is.

“Teams grow during these moments, when one person stumbles and others step up. We don’t dwell on mistakes—we analyze them and work to improve our performance next time, absolutely.”

Mothiba, who has been recovering from a knee injury that needed surgery, has participated in 13 matches across all competitions this season, netting one goal and providing one assist.
