Fortunately for Manchester United, Mainoo is not stepping aside. His best week of the season included two remarkable performances, featuring a winning goal and a contract signing in between.

Since the league resumed post-March internationals, admiration for Mainoo has grown, both with and without his presence on the field.

United faced defeat in a matchup against Leeds United while Mainoo was sidelined with an injury. With his comeback, they have won all three encounters against Chelsea, Brentford, and Liverpool.

Michael Carrick commended Mainoo’s performance at Stamford Bridge as the best he’s seen during his management. The 21-year-old has built upon that display to highlight a personal resurgence at his boyhood club.

In his two Champions League appearances, Casemiro has conceded four goals against Bayern Munich and was sent off during a 3-2 home defeat to Galatasaray, leaving United at the bottom of their group in 2023.

As Casemiro’s tenure wanes, Mainoo’s ascent continues. Against Liverpool, Mainoo’s passing accuracy surpassed Casemiro’s by 10 percent, and he lost possession merely six times, while Casemiro did so 14 times.

Furthermore, Casemiro was dribbled past five times compared to Mainoo’s one. Both players equaled the number of interceptions, and Casemiro only won one more ground duel than Mainoo.

Casemiro’s commendable farewell season relies heavily on a lighter workload, and perhaps his most lasting legacy at United will be Mainoo’s transformation into a more complete midfielder.

United is unlikely to sign two (or three) midfielders resembling Casemiro. Instead, they are targeting younger options in their early to mid-20s with Premier League experience.

Players like Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Sandro Tonali, Alex Scott, and others have all impressed against United. Notably, Tonali’s biggest achievement was winning the Serie A title with AC Milan four years ago.

Chances are that Mainoo’s future midfield partners will be older than him, but he will nevertheless serve as a senior pillar in the midfield. He began training with United’s first team at just 17.

United is willing to secure a third midfield signing if they can offload Ugarte. Mainoo and Ugarte’s pairing has been ineffective, with United winning only two of the 15 matches they’ve played alongside each other.

“That’s undoubtedly the next challenge as we gear up for more matches,” Carrick noted regarding the need to bolster the squad before United’s return to the Champions League.

“Having long intervals between games has been somewhat exasperating at times, presenting both advantages and disadvantages.
