South Africa Rejects Demands to Transfer G20 Presidency to Junior US Official in Trump’s Absence
South Africa has categorically rejected any proposals for President Cyril Ramaphosa to pass the G20 presidency to a junior representative from the United States embassy. This suggestion arose following the announcement that US President Donald Trump would not be attending the G20 Leaders’ Summit.
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya addressed the issue shortly after Ramaphosa’s opening remarks at the summit. He affirmed that such a transfer of presidency would violate diplomatic protocol and could not be considered.

Despite the ongoing discussion, Magwenya stressed that the G20 presidency will still be handed over to the United States as planned.

Magwenya reiterated that South Africa’s position aligns with international diplomatic standards. His remarks came after increased speculation due to Trump’s absence, along with calls from several delegates for an interim representative to take the presidency.

Expert Suggests Declaration Could Enhance G20 Credibility
Political Analyst Dr. Sithembele Mbete remarked that the G20’s legitimacy would remain strong if leaders agree to adopt a Summit Declaration.
Mbete noted, “If the leaders have decided to adopt a declaration summarising the outcomes of the 130 meetings that took place in the G20 over the past year, that is certainly a positive development.
“This reinforces both the credibility and legitimacy of the G20, regardless of whether the United States is present and participating. It’s essential to demonstrate that the G20 is a serious negotiating forum, irrespective of the US’s attendance.”
