Cat Matlala Secures Court Approval to Remain at Kgosi Mampuru Prison Until May 13

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has approved a request from businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, also known as “Cat”, who is facing corruption allegations, to stay at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre.

Matlala was present in court on Monday, where the decision was made that he will remain at the facility until 13 May to facilitate ongoing discussions with his legal counsel.

Legal Team Advocates for Improved Trial Preparation

Matlala’s attorneys contended that his continued presence in Pretoria would enhance their ability to prepare for trial, a point the court recognized.

Earlier this year, he was moved to the Ebongweni Super Maximum Correctional Centre in Kokstad, which made it challenging for him to consult his legal representatives.

This relocation, which occurred in December 2025, led Matlala to petition the Johannesburg High Court, citing difficulties in effectively meeting with his defense team.

Matlala is facing several charges concerning an allegedly improper R360 million tender that was issued by the South African Police Service in 2024.

The State claims that he and his co-accused utilized front companies and forged documents to obtain the lucrative contract.
