Driver Flees to Evade Breathalyser, Cash Bag Recovered Following Car Chase
Durban – A car chase ensued when a driver attempted to evade a breathalyser test conducted by Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officials, culminating in the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of a significant amount of cash.
Detailing the sequence of events that led to the arrests and the cash recovery, KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma stated that RTI officials had stopped a vehicle being driven recklessly in Kokstad.
The officials halted the car, which was emitting loud music.
“Just before the breathalyser test could be administered, the driver accelerated away. His three accomplices jumped out of the moving vehicle further down the road,” MEC Duma recalled.
“The RTI pursued the vehicle and swiftly apprehended the driver.
“Inside the vehicle, they discovered expensive liquor and large amounts of cash.”
A businessman, whose supermarket had recently been robbed, stepped forward to identify one of the suspects.
MEC Duma confirmed that the driver and the other suspects who exited the moving vehicle were arrested.
“We commend RTI Kokstad, as law enforcement officials, for resisting the temptation to take the large sums of money in exchange for releasing the motorist,” MEC Duma stated.
“We are encouraged by their commitment to serve the people of KwaZulu-Natal with integrity.
“We are dedicated to fixing our country, and we stand resolute.
“We will continue to remove reckless drivers and criminals from our roadways.”
