Chelsea Ratings: Caicedo Underwhelms in Lackluster Performance as Delap’s Goalless Streak Hits 21 Matches
A tragedy struck Chelsea even before the kick-off, with Cole Palmer ruled out due to a hamstring injury.
The situation worsened quickly as Brighton opened the scoring just three minutes in, courtesy of Ferdi Kadioglu.

Brighton maintained their dominance throughout the first half, with Karou Mitoma and Jack Hinshelwood both coming close to doubling their lead.
Looking to change the tide after halftime, Liam Rosenior brought on Alejandro Garnacho for Wesley Fofana and altered the strategy.
Nevertheless, it proved ineffective as ten minutes later, Jack Hinshelwood made it 2-0 following Georginio Rutter overpowering Moises Caicedo.
As things deteriorated further, chants of “F*** off Rosenior” echoed from the home supporters even before Danny Welbeck netted Brighton’s third goal…

ROBERT SANCHEZ – 5
His visit to face his former club could have certainly gone better, as he faced criticism from old fans.
Early in the match, he produced an impressive save to deny Karou Mitoma, but sadly conceded a goal shortly after due to a misfortunate deflection off Wesley Fofana.

A careless pass from the back nearly put his team down 2-0 within 20 minutes, but Trevoh Chalobah saved the day; however, his distribution throughout the match left much to be desired.
He did pull off several key saves, particularly against Kadioglu in the second half, yet his distribution remained a glaring weakness.

MALO GUSTO – 3
He found himself in a difficult position, struggling to contain Karou Mitoma.
It seemed as if the Japanese winger had him on the ropes from the start, and he couldn’t contribute much to the attack.
TREVOH CHALOBAH – 4
A crucial block on the goal line saved Chelsea after a subpar pass from Sanchez put them in jeopardy at 1-0.
While most defensive lapses weren’t his fault, he was outnumbered during Brighton’s second goal; nonetheless, his performance didn’t merit an above-average rating.
WESLEY FOFANA – 3
The French defender needed a better connection when trying to block Kadioglu’s opening goal, unwittingly redirecting it into his own net.
He made several clearances but received a yellow card in the first half before being substituted for Alejandro Garnacho.

JORREL HATO – 5
Hato’s header from a Pascal Gross corner landed directly at Kadioglu’s feet, a scenario some might view as unlucky while others might see it as a weak play.
Despite this error, he was among the few Chelsea players who exhibited some pride in his performance, showing good advancement and tackling resilience.
MARC CUCURELLA – 2
Among the ex-Brighton players Chelsea acquired, Marc Cucurella is arguably the least favored by Seagulls supporters.
After inadvertently leaking team news to his barber about Cole Palmer’s injury, he owed the team a strong performance but really fell short.
His touch was inconsistent, passing was subpar when it counted, and defensively, he did not meet expectations.

ROMEO LAVIA – 4
He seemed almost invisible in the Chelsea midfield, which is disappointing given his talent.
He attempted a long-range shot that sailed over the bar in the first half, and while his passing was accurate, it lacked any real progression.
MOISES CAICEDO – 1
Caicedo is usually one of the elite midfielders, but this match was not his finest hour.
His passes often went astray, and he was overpowered by Georginio Rutter leading to Brighton’s second goal, failing to track back against Hinshelwood.
This was his worst performance in a Chelsea shirt yet, especially against the team that secured a hefty £115m transfer fee for him.
ENZO FERNANDEZ – 2
Fernandez took up the captain’s role for Chelsea during this match; however, without Reece James, the team lacked adequate role models for the inexperienced players.
He couldn’t inspire Chelsea’s offensive effort, and there appeared to be minimal harmony between midfield and attack.
PEDRO NETO – 1
The Portuguese winger played an unusually defensive role at times, and didn’t execute it well.
His first touch was erratic, and his dribbling often felt aimless, leading to him stumbling over his own feet.
He struggled on the wing and was physically outmatched by Kadioglu.

LIAM DELAP – 1
He appears unfit to represent this club. In all my years, I’ve rarely seen a striker who seems so out of form.
While he has the physicality, his technical skills fall woefully short, and Joao Pedro shows the critical need for a blend of these abilities.
Delap was easily handled by Jan Paul Van Hecke, who might as well have been enjoying a glass of wine and a book while defending against him.
His goalless streak has now extended to 21 matches.

SUBSTITUTES:
ALEJANDRO GARNACHO (WESLEY FOFANA, HT) – 3
He was underwhelming upon entering the field, at a time when Chelsea required him to ignite their performance.
Yet again, he struggled to retain possession and moved forward without impactful direction.
DARIO ESSUGO (ROMEO LAVIA, 73) – 5
Similar to Lavia, he appeared unable to make a significant impact on the game.
MARC GUIU (LIAM DELAP, 73) – 5
Managed one decent shot which was blocked, surpassing Delap’s meager contributions.
It’s difficult to expect much from a player who has had minimal playtime this season, especially with a lackluster attacking trio supporting him.
