Mofokeng Stays Steadfast: Pirates Hold onto First Place After Derby Draw
Forward Relebohile Mofokeng of Orlando Pirates has recognized that their Betway Premiership encounter with Kaizer Chiefs was quite demanding, but he emphasized that the team will continue to fight as the title race intensifies.
The game between Pirates and Chiefs ended in a 1–1 stalemate in front of a packed crowd at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
It was a challenging match for both sides, particularly for Mofokeng, the 2024/25 Young Player of the Season, who struggled to create the usual scoring opportunities.
While the draw may appear disappointing for Pirates in their title chase alongside Mamelodi Sundowns, it is certainly more favorable than a defeat. Sundowns also faced a challenge, drawing 0-0 against Richards Bay on the same day, although they still have a game in hand.
“It was a very tough match against a strong opponent,” Mofokeng stated.

“The Soweto Derby is always a real test, but I believe our team did well. We managed to score once, and so did they, which means we can take this point with confidence.
“We gave our all. We worked to create chances, defended well, and did everything within our power because we’re competing for the league. We pushed ourselves to the limit. Our best efforts are what we can offer, and we will continue to push ahead and aim for success,” he concluded.
Pirates remain at the top of the standings with 59 points from 26 matches, leading Sundowns by a narrow margin of one point, as Sundowns have secured 58 points from 25 games.
