Ncikazi Dismisses Excuses Ahead of Weather Challenge at Athlone
Orlando Pirates’ assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi emphasized the importance of securing three points when the Buccaneers face Stellenbosch in Tuesday’s Betway Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium, as they aim for the league title.
The Pirates head into the match motivated to enhance their title ambitions and close the gap at the top of the table.
Mamelodi Sundowns currently lead the standings with 64 points, while the Buccaneers are in second place with 59 points—leaving them five points adrift and with minimal margin for error as the season approaches its end.
This match represents the second league encounter between the teams this season, following the Pirates’ win over Stellenbosch in their first-round home fixture earlier in the season. The Soweto giants are now targeting a league double over Stellies at this pivotal point in the title race.
This game also carries historical significance for Pirates, who are chasing their first league title since the 2011/12 season.

The last time Pirates visited Athlone Stadium during a title race was on May 4, 2019, when Cape Town City interrupted their ambitions with a dramatic 2–2 draw.
As they gear up for another crucial trip to Athlone, Ncikazi affirmed that the team’s focus remains sharp despite the challenges expected in Cape Town.
“The preparations are straightforward—three points are essential,” he stated.
“Our focus is on the process of claiming those three points under challenging conditions in Cape Town. Tough circumstances push us to perform at our best.
“We aim to execute our game plan effectively and outscore our opponents. Given the current atmosphere at the club and the players’ readiness, I believe we can overcome Stellenbosch.”
A win for the Pirates would keep their title hopes alive and maintain the pressure on Sundowns at the top of the Betway Premiership table.
