King Mswati III of Eswatini Celebrates 40 Years on the Throne

Lobamba – Somhlolo National Stadium in Lobamba, Eswatini, buzzed with excitement on Friday, 24 April 2026, as the kingdom marked the 40th anniversary of King Mswati III’s reign.

The grand festivities, which coincided with the King’s 58th birthday, welcomed numerous dignitaries, state leaders, and royal figures.

Among the notable attendees were former South African President Jacob Zuma, Lesotho Monarch Letsie III, Zulu Monarch Misuzulu ka Zwelithini, Botswana President Duma Boko, Mozambican President Daniel Chopo, and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

While addressing his guests, the Eswatini Monarch reflected on his ascent to the throne at just 18 years old, recalling how challenging it was to deliver his inaugural speech at the same stadium.

King Mswati III emphasized that the 40-year journey of his reign signifies an important chapter in history, not just for himself but also for the mountain kingdom, which has a population of around 1.3 million.

“On the first day of my address, things were not as they are today,” the King noted.

“Today marks 40 years, and with God’s grace and your support, I stand proudly before you once again.”

The King called on his subjects to embrace their heritage and strive to preserve their culture.

He added that he would continue to improve the services available, particularly in the realm of quality education.

“We have come this far together, and together we will forge a future rooted in unity, bolstered by tradition, and driven by hope,” King Mswati III stated.

“In unity, there is strength. While much has been achieved, there is still much ahead of us.”

King Mswati III was installed as king in April 1986 following the death of his polygamous father, King Sobhuza II, who had 70 wives, 210 children, and 1,000 grandchildren.

King Sobhuza II reigned for over 80 years, from 1921 to 1982.

After his death, there was a struggle for power among regents, including Queen Regent Dzeliwe, who ruled for a year from 1982, followed by a three-year reign of Queen Regent Ntombi.

King Mswati III took the throne afterward and has led ever since.
