Introducing Miriam Altman: A Fresh Jazz Talent Unveils Her Debut Single “The Train”
Cape Town – Miriam Altman, a mesmerizing South African jazz vocalist, is ready to unveil her eagerly awaited debut single, The Train, signaling an exciting new chapter in her artistic journey.
As a musical storyteller, Miriam Altman immerses her audience in a deeply personal and heartfelt experience, reflecting a lifetime of rich encounters, cultural influences, and musical inspirations.
Having received her initial training as a classical soprano in her early years, Miriam has transitioned into the realm of jazz.
With several decades between her classical foundation and her recent embrace of jazz, her voice has matured to a lower and deeper register that she is now exploring.
Emerging onto the music scene with a distinct sound, she blends meticulously crafted compositions with playful improvisation, showcasing her emotive three-octave range.

“It’s uncommon to witness a musician of Miriam’s talent emerge later in life,” remarked Nikki Froneman from Arte Viva Management, a Cape Town-based jazz agency.
“Her music not only highlights her artistic evolution but also stands as a testament to a life rich with experiences across various continents and cultures.”
Miriam’s music draws from African rhythms, blues, rock, spirituals, classical, and jazz, creating a sound that is vibrant, intimate, contemplative, and soul-stirring.
She finds particular inspiration in the legendary voices of Miriam Makeba, Ella Fitzgerald, and Anita O’Day, alongside the innovative spirits of Bobby McFerrin, Joni Mitchell, Cassandra Wilson, Dianne Reeves, and Rachel Ferrel, as well as South African icons like Ray Phiri, Busi Mhlongo, Caiphus Semenya, Thandiswa Mazwai, and Zoe Modiga, in addition to contemporary artists such as Esperanza Spalding, H.E.R., and Somi.
Outside of music, Miriam is recognized for her substantial contributions to development economics, public policy, strategic leadership, and social activism.
Currently recording her debut album with some of South Africa’s top young jazz talents, Miriam is unveiling her songs gradually, allowing each piece the opportunity to resonate and connect with her expanding audience.
Miriam’s debut single was released on 28 March 2025.
The Train transcends mere melody – it encapsulates a lifetime of stories, experiences, and creative exploration.
“The Train serves as a powerful narrative, using the metaphor of an elusive train to symbolize aspiration, struggle, resilience, and perseverance,” shared Miriam Altman.
“I drew inspiration from Bra Hugh Masekela’s Stimela (Coal Train) as well as Yvonne Chaka-Chaka’s Stimela.”
