Ben Youssef Urges Unity in Anticipation of Soweto Derby

Khalil Ben Youssef, co-coach of Kaizer Chiefs, has emphasized the need for “mental strength” as Amakhosi prepare for a sold-out Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium this Sunday.

The Amakhosi enter this highly anticipated second-round match eager to turn the tide following a heavy 3–0 defeat to Pirates at the same venue in February, coupled with two other losses leading up to that game.

Nevertheless, conditions have significantly improved since then. Chiefs have regained their momentum and confidence, displaying an impressive string of results in recent weeks.

Amakhosi have secured victories in five of their last six matches, with one draw, currently sitting third on the table with 46 points from 24 league games this season.

This resurgence has not only bolstered their position but also reignited the team’s belief ahead of one of the season’s marquee events.

“Our primary focus is on mental readiness. With the right mindset, anything is achievable; without it, success is elusive,” he remarked.

“The first derby took place when we were coming off disappointing results in the CAF Confederation Cup and had just lost to Stellenbosch. We were also struggling with several injuries. Our injury situation has been quite unfortunate lately.

“Now, with the team back to full strength, our consistent performance over the last six matches is evident. We’re getting the right results, and our quality of play has been impressive. I feel we are making good strides.

“During the first derby, we lacked momentum, but now the players are performing remarkably, eager to show that they’re ready to compete. I am optimistic that Sunday will yield a different result, and we will pursue victory.”

Ben Youssef also expressed satisfaction with the team’s preparations for the upcoming match, highlighting the importance of maintaining their current form and performing for the fans.

“I believe our preparations have been very effective. We understand the importance of this match, and everyone is ready to showcase their abilities,” he continued.

“After a successful streak, it is crucial that we keep that consistency and positive momentum. I hope we are poised to deliver a strong performance on Sunday and make our supporters proud.”
