In the early hours of Monday, residents in Atteridgeville, located west of Pretoria, were abruptly awakened by the sounds of gunfire and explosions, creating a wave of panic throughout the community.

Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene near a local gas station, where the disturbance was reported. The exact cause of the incident remains uncertain at this time.

The unexpected outbreak of violence instilled fear in many residents. While some ventured outside to grasp the situation, others chose to stay indoors for their safety.

Residents Share Their Experience of Fear and Confusion in Atteridgeville

“We were jolted awake by loud bangs and rapid gunfire. It was terrifying, and no one seemed to understand what was happening. People in the area started screaming and rushing outside to see what was unfolding.

Some families opted to remain indoors, clearly anxious about their safety. Even after things calmed down, the atmosphere in the area was still tense,” recounted a shaken resident.

South African Police Service spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that they are aware of the incident and are in the process of gathering more information.
