Four Dead in Inanda Shooting as KZN Police Investigate Homicide Case

Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have initiated four murder charges following a deadly shooting incident in Bhambayi, Inanda, located north of Durban.

The event transpired just before midnight on Friday when a group of community patrollers confronted three men suspected of being involved in a string of robberies in the vicinity.

Initial reports indicate that the encounter took place on Nohohwana Skeke Street and swiftly escalated into a gunfight.

The gunfire exchange resulted in four deaths.

One community patroller and one of the alleged criminals were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two more patrollers, who sustained injuries during the incident, succumbed to their wounds in the hospital.

Police Commissioner Advises Caution for Community Patrols

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has urged community patrol organizations to focus on safety and adhere to legal guidelines.

He emphasized the need for collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), cautioning against direct confrontations with suspected offenders.

“We are aware that criminals are willing to shoot at police officers, indicating they won’t hesitate to target civilians,” he stated.

Mkhwanazi further remarked that entities like Community Police Forums should function as allies to law enforcement, rather than partake in high-risk activities.

This incident, occurring just before the Workers’ Day holiday, sheds light on the perils encountered by community patrollers in regions plagued by violent crime.

Inanda continues to grapple with persistent issues of gun violence and criminal gangs engaged in robberies and extortion.
