Dublin Controversy: Lions Fume Over Disallowed Try While Papier Makes Bulls History

The Lions are sure to feel let down after a series of crucial decisions went against them in a match that might leave some fans scratching their heads. They fell to Leinster Rugby, 31-7, at Aviva Stadium — a score that didn’t fully reflect their overall performance.

In a high-spirited and physical contest, the Lions held their ground against an early Leinster onslaught and displayed great resilience under extended pressure, though they ultimately lost their grip in the last 10 minutes.

Leinster started strong in the third minute, capitalizing on a bit of fortune when the ball ricocheted off Jamie Osborne’s leg, sailing past the Lions’ defense. Referee Hollie Davidson allowed play to continue, enabling Osborne to sprint in unchallenged for the opening try.

Sam Prendergast converted successfully, giving Leinster an early lead.

Shortly after, the Lions faced a major setback when their standout flank Ruan Venter had to be taken off on a stretcher, replaced by Batho Hlekani.

The Lions maintained their fight and felt wronged in the 20th minute when Siba Mahashe appeared to score a magnificent solo try, only for the TMO and match officials to cancel it. Erich Cronje was ruled offside before he dislodged the ball from Leinster scrumhalf Luke McGrath in the build-up.

Still reeling from that call, Leinster surged into the Lions’ 22, and after multiple pick-and-go attempts, Thomas Clarkson crossed over for Leinster’s second try.

Prendergast added the conversion, extending Leinster’s lead to 14-0.

Despite the setbacks, the Lions continued to show resilience, maintaining their structure and intensity. They were rewarded in the 35th minute when captain Francke Horn broke through the Leinster defense for a well-deserved try.

The dependable Chris Smith successfully converted, leaving the contest evenly balanced as both teams headed into halftime.

HALF-TIME: LEINSTER 14-7 LIONS

The Lions showcased impressive determination at the start of the second half, denying Leinster twice — first by holding them up on the line, then by forcing a turnover as the hosts aimed to switch play wide.

The match evolved into a fierce physical battle, with both teams relentless in their efforts.

As the clock approached the hour mark, the Lions worked their way into the hosts’ 22 but failed to convert their territory into points.

With just 10 minutes remaining and the match still very much in play, Leinster moved the ball across the pitch, with Rieko Ioane delivering a perfectly timed pass that allowed Hugo Keenan to score a hard-earned try.

Ciarán Frawley added a splendid conversion, giving Leinster a 21-7 lead.

Leinster then compounded the Lions’ troubles as Ioane took advantage of a well-executed play to secure a bonus point, with Jimmy O’Brien adding another try in the closing moments.

Earlier in the day, the Vodacom Bulls achieved a resounding 54-19 victory over Zebre Parma, scoring eight tries in a commanding display.

While they weren’t consistently clinical, the Bulls demonstrated too much strength and skill for their Italian opponents, with eight different players each scoring tries.

The opening try was a breathtaking effort that began deep within their own half, sparked by outstanding play from Canan Moodie, culminating in Willie le Roux finishing with flair.

Moodie added a try of his own before Zebre, against the run of play, responded with an opportunistic score from Jacopo Trulla.

Cheswill Jooste converted a chance out wide and finished brilliantly, while Sergeal Petersen secured the bonus point ahead of halftime.

Zebre managed another try before the break and continued to apply pressure on the Pretoria side, but the Bulls decisively pulled away in the second half with tries from Ruan Vermaak, Cameron Hanekom, Harold Vorster, and Jeandre Rudolph.

This match held special significance for Embrose Papier, who came off the bench to become the Bulls’ all-time leading scrumhalf with 170 appearances, surpassing the longstanding record held by Joost van der Westhuizen.

These results have propelled Leinster to third place in the United Rugby Championship table, moved the Bulls up to fourth, and caused the Lions to slip to fifth.
