Burnley 2 Aston Villa 2: Villa Maintains Champions League Aspirations Thanks to Zian Flemming’s Late Equalizer
Now that’s an example of a striking return to reality.
Heroics in Europe on Thursday, followed by a challenge in East Lancashire just 72 hours later… against the team with the worst home record in the league.
Perhaps Aston Villa’s standing in the Champions League will ultimately depend on a pivotal 90 minutes in Istanbul.
They arrived at the already-relegated Burnley after a commanding victory over Nottingham Forest, which secured their place in a Europa League showdown with Freiburg in two weeks.
A win against the Clarets, who had managed only two victories and a mere 15 goals at home all season – the worst in the Premier League – would have nearly solidified their position among Europe’s top clubs well before the season concluded.
Instead, they struggled for a draw that keeps them just four points ahead of sixth-placed Bournemouth.

MARRIAGE CRISIS

With their next two matches against Liverpool on Friday and title-contending Manchester City to follow, Villa have left the door open for the Cherries.
This time, there could be no excuses because, unlike the previous week’s debacle, this wasn’t an under-strength squad.
A week ago, Unai Emery deployed a completely different lineup that succumbed to Spurs. This time, only three changes were made – yet once again, they faced humiliation.
Not due to their own failings, it should be noted, but rather the grit and resolve of a Burnley side determined to leave a mark before their drop.

Guided bravely by dedicated striker Zion Flemming, alongside the talented Hannibal Mejri, Loum Tchaouna, and Lesley Ugochukwa.
When the latter two combined for Ugochukwu to unleash a shot from 25 yards, Emi Martinez should have either caught or deflected it wide.
Instead, he merely redirected it back into the danger zone, allowing Jaidon Anthony to finish with the simplest of tap-ins.
It could have been two when Tchaouna set up Flemming as Ezri Konsa stumbled, yet Flemming shot high and wide despite aiming accurately.
Villa, despite their fluid passing, were hardly troubling keeper Max Weiss on his Premier League debut.
True, he was nearly caught out once when John McGinn slipped him the ball, but Ross Barkley couldn’t control it and shot wide. However, he made amends shortly after.
By that point, Villa had already had a goal ruled out by VAR after Ollie Watkins netted from close range.
There was honestly no reason for the aspiring World Cup striker to be offside before receiving Morgan Rogers’ cross.
Villa were gaining momentum, and when Rogers set up Barkley, his shot forced Weiss into a dive to push it away. He was only delaying the inevitable.
From McGinn’s following corner, Barkley – who had found space across the box unmarked – rose to head in a brilliant equalizer.
Just before the hour mark, Villa took the lead, with one of the most direct goals you’ll ever see.
Keeper Emi Martinez, never hesitant to start an attack, was slightly outside his box when he launched the ball downfield.
The long ball sailed between Axel Tuanzebe and Maxime Esteve, and Watkins expertly cushioned it with his chest before finishing past Weiss.
Game over? Clarets defeated? Mission accomplished? Don’t count on it. Burnley may be relegated, but they weren’t finished yet.
Moments after Watkins’ goal, Flemming netted the best goal of the match, scoring smoothly after a lovely flick from Hannibal Mejri.
It would have been the Burnley striker’s second goal if only he had longer studs, narrowly missing Hannibal’s earlier low cross.
Villa responded once more, and certainly had opportunities to secure their Champions League position, especially through McGinn.
There remains a strong chance they could qualify via the Premier League, but don’t rule out the necessity of winning the Europa League to achieve that after this.
