Wayne Rooney’s Brother Reveals Love Island Champion Amid FA Cup Triumph, While Ex-Man Utd Star’s Future Remains Unclear

LOVE ISLAND champion Tom Clare has been released by his football club, managed by Wayne Rooney’s brother.

As they prepare for another season in the sixth tier of English football, the club has disclosed its retained list ahead of the summer transfer window.

The list shows that seven players will stay for the next season, while discussions continue for eight others, including former Manchester United player Cameron Borthwick-Jackson.

Nine players have had their contracts terminated.

This group includes the 2024 Love Island: All Stars winner, Clare.

The 26-year-old joined the Silkmen in 2021 after owner Rob Smethurst acquired the club.

He became the team’s top scorer during the 2021/22 season, netting 23 goals, which led to a two-year contract in 2022.

His television commitments briefly took him away, but he returned in 2024 under Robbie Savage’s management.

John Rooney took over as manager in 2025 following his retirement and Savage’s exit.

Love Island star Clare has made only one appearance this season.

However, he was spotted celebrating with his teammates after their impressive upset against Crystal Palace during the FA Cup third round back in January.

The club announced: “Following the conclusion of the 2025/26 Enterprise National League North season, Macclesfield FC is now able to reveal our retained list.

“We sincerely thank all departing players for their dedication and hard work during their time at the Leasing.com Stadium, and we wish them the best in their future endeavors.”
